6 of the most magical Christmas events at Darling Harbour

While it’s undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas can also be pretty stressful. Celebrating the festive season with your family is no mean feat. Fortunately, Darling Harbour has many magical (and mostly free) experiences to keep the kids entertained in the lead up to the big day. Here are some of the most incredible Christmas events in Sydney in 2018.

1. Christmas movies

Aside from creating special memories with your loved ones and eating dangerous amounts of glazed ham – one of the best things about the festive season is watching Christmas movies. Why not make the most of the beautiful summer weather and watch your favourite films – including The Polar Express, Miracle on 34th Street, and Elf – on a giant outdoor screen, for free! Pick up a feast from nearby Umi Sushi, Betty’s Burgers or Guzman y Gomez (to name only a few of the delicious dining options) and settle in under the stars for some Christmas spirit on the silver screen. On now until Sunday 23 December, you can catch two different movies each night with screenings at 6pm and 8.30pm.

2. Christmas craft workshops

From painting baubles to decorating gingerbread, creating Christmas terrariums to snowflake ornaments – kids can get creative at a range of festive and free craft workshops. Not only will it keep your kids entertained for a few hours, you’ll also go home with decorations you can cherish for many years to come. On now until Monday 24 December, 11am to 4pm, each day offers a different arty activity for children aged four to 11.

3. Christmas story time

Children can hear their favourite festive tales come to life with magical readings of classic Christmas stories. Grab a bite to eat from Nok Nok Thai Eating House, a healthy snack at Parisi, or sweet treat from Movenpick, before finding a spot on the Village Green grass to listen in. If it’s a wet weather day, don’t worry – Story time will relocate undercover to Monkey Baa Theatre if it’s raining. Story time is free and runs on Saturday 23 December and Sunday 24 December from 2pm to 5pm.

4. Christmas jumper photo booth

Forget the summer heat – ‘tis officially the season for ugly Christmas jumpers. Until Monday 24 December, between 1pm and 5pm, you can choose from a selection of unsightly sweaters and pose for a snap in the free photo booth. Grab a mate and make your festive fashion truly unforgettable by getting photographic evidence. Most importantly, share your picture on social media with the hashtag #DarlingHarbour so we can all see the eye sores!

5. Festive face painting

From now until Monday 24 December, between 2pm and 4pm, kids can channel their favourite Christmas character with free face painting. Once the family is festively decorated, check out some of the many attractions Darling Harbour has to offer including the brand new day and night reef experience at Sea Life (displaying 24 hours in the Great Barrier Reef) or the limited edition Shark & Humanity exhibition at the Maritime Museum.

6. Fireworks

Christmas lights are quite literally a highlight of the festive season and Darling Harbour goes all out with its sparkly showcase. See the stunning light displays and projections plus the epic firework show every Saturday night from 15 December to 29 December, at 9pm. Fill up beforehand at family-friendly (and seriously mouth watering) restaurants like Crintini’s, Grill’d and Fratelli’s.
